ST. GEORGE — Police say a driver who failed to yield on a left turn caused another vehicle to narrowly miss hitting a house Tuesday morning.

Tiffany Mitchell, public information officer for the St. George Police Department, told St. George News the incident occurred at 6:50 a.m. when a 2010 Subaru Outback traveling on Valley View Drive from 450 North failed to yield to a 2014 Nissan Altima, causing that vehicle to end up in the home’s yard.

“The driver of the Subaru failed to yield for that other car, so that driver just veered out of the way to try not to get hit and landed in the yard,” Mitchell said.

A palm tree and some shrubs in the home’s landscaping were damaged, said Mitchell, adding that the Subaru driver was a 28-year-old male who was issued a citation for failure to yield on a left turn. The Nissan driver was a 22-year-old male.

Mitchell reminds drivers to be cautious when making left turns.

“Make sure when you’re making specifically left turns that you not only look that the coast is clear before you make that turn. It’s your obligation to do so,” Mitchell said. “We need to slow down. We need to take a breath behind the wheel, not be in such a hurry and slow our speeds.”

She said drivers need to “do better” and pay attention when driving to lessen some crashes. Mitchell said the crash is still under investigation.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
