ST. GEORGE — A man was airlifted after struggling to keep his head above water at Sand Hollow State Park Sunday evening.
At approximately 5 p.m., a man in his 20s was swimming in the Sand Hollow Reservoir and began to struggle, Devan Chavez, a spokesman for the Utah Division of State Parks, told St. George News. He was spotted by a group in a boat, whose occupants pulled him onboard and called for help before taking him to the boat ramp.
There, Utah State Park rangers began CPR, Chavez said. Intermountain Life Flight arrived to transport the man to the hospital. Information about the swimmer’s condition has not been released.
“I’d also like to remind those who are venturing out into the outdoors this holiday week to stay safe,” he said. “Whether you’re visiting the desert trails of Southern Utah or the lakes and reservoirs, do your best to make safety top priority. Life jackets and helmets can help stop a situation from turning tragic.”
Southern Utahns should take a family member or friend with them when exploring so they can assist or call for help if needed, Chavez said.
“Always recreate within your ability, and reach out to a park ranger if you have any questions or concerns,” he added. “Stay hydrated and have a great time.”
This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
