Washington County SAR retrieves 2 men at Toquerville Falls after jumps lead to broken ankles

ST. GEORGE — A trio of young men recreating at Toquerville Falls got more than they bargained for Saturday afternoon when two of them were injured after jumping off the rocks.

Washington County Sheriff’s deputy Jacob Paul told St. George News that one of the friends had to be taken out on a Jeep while a second was airlifted to St. George Hospital, both suffering from broken ankles. The third friend, meanwhile, was unhurt in the incident, Paul said.

“It was a group of three friends that jumped off Toquerville Falls at the same time,” Paul said. “One of them ended up with two broken ankles and the other one had one broken ankle.”

Paul added that the spot at the falls is particularly popular right now because the water from the falls forms a nice pool that looks deep enough to jump into.

“They quickly realized that it’s not as deep as they thought,” Paul said.

As seen in the video above, which Paul provided, a Life Flight helicopter landed right next to the falls before loading one of the patients aboard and departing for the hospital.

Paul said that the incident highlights the importance of being smart about your outdoor recreation choices.

“Incidents like this are more and more common every year,” Paul said. “Every year it gets worse and worse.”
