SALT LAKE CITY — Weather forecasters in Salt Lake City have issued upcoming heat warnings near Glen Canyon Recreation Area, Lake Powell, Washington, Garfield and Kane counties in Southern Utah and northern Arizona.

According to an alert issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday, the area for the advisory includes the cities of Hurricane, Ivins, St George, Big Water, Bullfrog and surrounding areas, as well as Zion National Park, San Rafael Swell, Capitol Reef National Park and vicinity,
South Central Utah and Western Canyonlands.

The alert runs from 11 a.m. Thursday through midnight Friday-Saturday.

According to the weather service: “Dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures between 104 and 108 degrees. On Thursday, there is about a 50% of reaching or exceeding the daily record high of 107 degrees in St. George. Overnight temperatures will only reach into the mid-70s, limiting overnight relief from the heat.”

The weather forecasters warned that heat illnesses can increase significantly during extreme heat weather-related events. Pets and both young and elderly residents are especially vulnerable.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” according to the weather alert. “Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”

Although the heat warning will be in effect June 6-8, Southern Utah’s reservoirs are still warming up, the forecasters said in the release.

“Water temperatures this early in the season are still cold,” the media release stated. “Please practice cold water safety if recreating on area lakes.”
