ST. GEORGE — Multiple police and emergency vehicles responded to a four-vehicle crash that was set in motion when two vehicles collided just north of the Green Spring onramp on northbound Interstate 15 in Washington City Wednesday evening.
Shortly before 5:45 p.m., officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the four-vehicle crash involving a Nissan Maxima, Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Xterra and GMC Sierra. Crews arrived to find all four vehicles severely damaged and partially blocking several lanes of travel.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden told St. George News one driver, who was in the Maxima, was unable to exit the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire crews using hydraulic equipment. Once freed from the wreckage, the driver was transported to St. George Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second driver in the GMC also sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital, Roden added.
The Xterra driver was outside the vehicle and reported they were uninjured at the scene, as did the driver of the Chevrolet.
At the time of the crash, the Maxima and Chevrolet were entering I-15 on the exit 10 onramp while the Xterra and the GMC were stopped off the shoulder near the median. As the entrance lanes merged into a single lane, the Maxima and the Chevrolet sideswiped one another, which sent the Maxima careening to the left across all lanes of travel where it struck the Xterra, which was then pushed into the back of the GMC upon impact.
Northbound traffic was impacted as travel was reduced to a single lane while responders tended to the scene and cleared the wreckage from the roadway. Multiple police units were called in to assist with traffic control. Roden said the crash is still under investigation and citations may be forthcoming.
The Washington City Fire Department posted a photo of the crash on the department’s Facebook page, along with a reminder to “stay vigilant and remember to always move over a lane if someone is pulled off on the shoulder.”
The Utah Highway Patrol, Washington City Police Department, Washington City Fire Department and St. George Fire Department responded to the large scene.
