Rescuers extricate injured ATV rider from site of crash in hills west of Cedar City

CEDAR CITY — A medical helicopter crew helped rescue a man who was injured in an all-terrain vehicle rollover in the hills several miles west of Cedar City on Tuesday evening.

Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Humphries said the incident was first reported shortly after 7:30 p.m., when Cedar Communications dispatchers received a call from a woman reporting that her friend had rolled his ATV.

“The male, approximately 42 years old, had sustained a broken arm and was unable to move his fingers, although he was breathing normally,” Humphries told Cedar City News on Wednesday morning.

Upon arriving at the scene, located along the Duncan Creek trail in Cottonwood Canyon, responders found a black Honda Rincon four-wheeler that was partially overturned, with the injured man a short distance away. 

Responding deputies documented the crash and attempted to locate the ATV’s vehicle identification number but were unsuccessful, Humphries said, adding that the vehicle appeared to have sustained only minor damage to a fender. 

“Due to the remote location, a landing zone was set up, and the Life Flight from St. George was called in,” Humphries added. “Deputies assisted in transporting medical personnel to the scene, as the ambulance was unable to access the area.”

The medical responders reportedly stabilized the man’s broken left arm and also applied a “C collar” on his neck to help prevent spinal injuries.

The Life Flight helicopter transported the man from the scene of the crash to the intersection of 2400 South and Bumblebee Road. At that point, he was then transferred to a Gold Cross Ambulance, which took him to Cedar City Hospital in reportedly stable condition. 

The sheriff’s deputies then cleared the scene without further incident, Humphries added.
