Dutchman Fire south of St. George up to 49 acres; no structures threatened

ST. GEORGE — The lightning-caused Dutchman Fire, which started Tuesday, grew slightly Wednesday due to extremely dry fuels in the vicinity.

Arizona Strip Bureau of Land Management Public Relations Specialist Rachel Carnahan told St. George News the blaze was visible from town Tuesday evening due to its “elevated position.”

The fire, located in the Seegmiller Mountain area, 12 miles south of St. George, was reported at approximately 5:45 p.m. Fire retardant air drops from two 2C single-engine tankers and two large air tankers made “major headway” in containing the fire.

“No structures were threatened by the fire, and there have been no closures in the area, though today (Wednesday) the fuels conditions were changed from high to critical, meaning that everything is a lot drier than it was before,” Carnahan said.

State and federal fire resources currently working the fire include five engines, one helicopter, three tankers and one aerial attack unit.

A post on the U.S. Forest Service’s Dixie National Forest Facebook page said a Fire Danger Closure is in effect for Oak Grove and Browse Roads from June 22-Sept. 30, unless rescinded earlier.

Additionally, Oak Grove Road was closed from the Oak Grove gate to the Oak Grove campground. Browse Road is closed from the Browse gate to the Browse Guard Station.
