ST. GEORGE — Two children were airlifted to Salt Lake City for urgent care after being struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter in St. George on Friday evening.
St. George Police Department Public Information Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News an arrest has been made in the incident involving one boy and one girl riding a scooter on 3000 East near Livia Drive at approximately 10 p.m.
“The vehicle turned left in front of a scooter that had two juveniles on it,” Mitchell said. “The scooter hit the passenger side door of the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.”
Officers located the female driver of the car down the road where she was later arrested on charges including leaving the scene of an accident and DUI, Mitchell said.
“The children were flown to Primary Children’s Hospital,” she added.
Mitchell said the the incident is still under investigation and although the driver was arrested, there were many other contributing factors.
“There were several witnesses who reported the children were driving too fast down the street on a machine with no headlights,” she said. “The driver was cited, but that wasn’t the defining factor of this crash. It’s getting crazy with all the motorized vehicles in St. George.”
Mitchell also clarified the incident occurred at 10 p.m. after the sun had gone down and the motorized scooter without headlights drove into the vehicle as it was making a legal turn.
