John Van Belle Besteman

March 21, 2024

John Van Belle Besteman passed away on March 21, surrounded by his family, his favorite music, and a lot of loving care. After residing in St. George and Sun Valley, Idaho for twenty-five years,

John spent his final seven months in Bellevue following the death of his beloved wife, Kay. John and his twin brother, Rob, were born in Davenport, Iowa, and they, along with their sister, Bev, grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee. He graduated from Wauwatosa High School and the University of Wisconsin with degrees in Engineering and Business.

After marrying Laurie Pike in 1957, they relocated to Seattle when John accepted a position with Boeing, where he served for forty years. His tenure at Boeing included a move with Laurie and their three children to Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, in 1971 to work for Boeing Computer Services, an experience John deemed “could not have been better.” Laurie and John returned to Bellevue in 1977.

Following their divorce, John married Kay Bell in 1986, with whom he resettled in Sun Valley and later St. George, Utah. Kay and John were enthusiastic skiers, hikers, and golfers, and John played a pivotal role in popularizing pickleball in both locales.

He is remembered for his sharp wit, his fondness for donuts, and his prowess on the pickleball court.

John is survived by daughters Catherine and Cynthia, son John (Alischia), stepdaughters Janet Bell and Susie Bell (Wally), as well as his cherished dog, Trouser. The family extends gratitude to Mac Zakulanda, who provided exceptional care to John in his final months.

Donations in John’s memory can be made to your local animal shelter.
