The closure is expected to last at least 90 days, during which time the necessary improvements will be carried out to ensure the longevity and safety of this iconic building, according to a news release issued by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The St. George Tabernacle, with its distinctive architecture and rich history, has been a focal point for cultural, religious and community events for over a century, the release states. Constructed in the late 19th century, it stands as a testament to the sacrifice of early pioneers and the enduring spirit of our community.

The Need for Reconstruction and Maintenance

To address issues surrounding normal wear and tear of the tabernacle since its last renovation and to preserve this historic gem for future generations, reconstruction and maintenance efforts will include:

  • Interior refurbishment: The Tabernacle’s interior will receive attention, including painting, restoration of original woodwork, repair of carpeting, seating, etc.
  • Roof repairs: Leaks and weather damage will be repaired to safeguard the interior.
  • Stairs, entries and exits: Modernizing essential access will enhance safety and functionality.

Previous Renovation

In 2016, the St. George Tabernacle underwent a comprehensive renovation, which included seismic retrofitting, accessibility improvements and aesthetic enhancements. According to the release, the community rallied together during that time, demonstrating their commitment to preserving its heritage.

In 2017, the Tabernacle received a fresh coat of historically accurate paint on its tower and trim, St. George News reported at the time.

Impact on Events

During the closure period, regular events held at the Tabernacle, such as concerts, lectures and community gatherings, will be temporarily relocated to alternative venues.
