CEDAR CITY — With the upcoming snow storms, the Utah Department of Transportation recently closed Highway 148 for the season. Although Highway 148 is closed, the park at Cedar Breaks National Monument remains open.

According to a media release, vehicles can access the northern side of the park, including North View Overlook, via Highway 143, which will remain open throughout the winter but may close temporarily due to heavy weather.

Cedar Breaks is pleased to announce a new visitor contact station located at North View Overlook. Starting Dec. 29, rangers will staff this station every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather depending.

The entrance fee is $10 per person and includes free snowshoe rentals, with limited availability. Interagency or America the Beautiful passes waive this fee for parties traveling together in a single vehicle.

From this new contact station, park rangers will be offering family-friendly guided snowshoe tours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. starting Dec. 29. Visitors can register at this link to ensure a spot.

Additionally, Cedar Breaks staff will host Dark Sky tours every Saturday night during the winter. A program will be offered at 5:30 p.m. and is reservation-only with limited seating. Star gazing will take place from approximately 6:30-8 p.m., no registration required. Visitors can register at this link to ensure a seat.

“A few friendly reminders for winter recreation at Cedar Breaks,” the media release stated. “The Point Supreme Overlook remains closed due to construction. Winter users should not attempt to access the overlook or the construction site, which is marked by orange snow poles. Until more snow accumulation occurs snowmobile use is not permitted within the monument. Additionally, skiing or snowboarding down the amphitheater of Cedar Breaks is prohibited.”
