ST. GEORGE  One person was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon following a collision at an intersection near Dixie High School.

Just after 3 p.m., St. George Police officers and other responders were sent to the intersection of 400 East and 700 South where a passenger car had collided with a van.

The passenger car had been northbound on 400 East heading toward the intersection when the light turned yellow, St. George Police officer Andy Mickelson said. Fearing they didn’t have enough time to safely stop, the driver continued through the intersection.

At the same time, a southbound van also entered the intersection, made a left turn to get on 700 South from 400 East and collided with the passenger car, Mickelson said.

While the passenger car was able to reach the side of the road out of traffic, the van was stuck in the middle of the eastern part of the intersection, blocking the middle lane. As responders dealt with the scene, traffic was able to pass by, albeit at a slow pace.

While the driver of the passenger car was uninjured, the van’s driver received a broken arm, Mickelson said. The van’s driver was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

A citation for failing to yield on a left turn was issued to the van’s driver, Mickelson said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
