Colorado man presumed drowned at Lake Powell

ST. GEORGE  A Colorado man is presumed dead after going over the side of a houseboat at Lake Powell Saturday.

Daniel Patrick McGuckin, 41, of Avon, Colorado, was with a group of nine friends on a houseboat Saturday afternoon heading to Bullfrog from the Escalante arm of Lake Powell when the man “seemed to decide to jump off the port side of the houseboat,” according to a joint press release from the National Park Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

He wasn’t wearing a life jacket at the time.

The group McGuckin had been with searched for him for 25 minutes without success before contacting authorities.

The National Park Service responded with four vessels from Halls Crossing, Bullfrog and Dangling Rope. Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Utah State Parks also responded.

A search was conducted by boat and the NPS Remote Operated Vessel dive boat.

McGuckin was not found and is now presumed dead, according to the press release.

The dive boat is being used to search for McGuckin’s body.

McGuckin disappeared approximately 15 miles south of Bullfrog by Iceberg Canyon in Kane County.

The incident is under investigation by the NPS, Utah State Parks and Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
