77-year-old hiker dies while attempting to clean up after others in Franklin Basin

LOGAN — A 77-year-old man died Saturday afternoon while hiking in the Franklin Basin area. Calvin Kunz was attempting to cross a river when he fell and struck his head.

Acccording to a report from Cache Valley Daily that cited Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi, Kunz was hiking with some family and friends at the time of the incident. As they were walking, the group had collected some garbage that had been left behind by other hikers.

Witnesses told deputies that as they came to the river, Kunz attempted to pass some of the garbage to another person when he lost his balance, fell back and struck his head.
