SOUTHERN UTAH — Children ages 18 and younger can get free lunch on most weekdays this summer at selected locations in Washington and Iron counties, with reduced-cost meals available to adults as well.
Although the programs in the two counties are operated differently, they are both funded and supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, which reportedly serves more than 200 million meals annually and is designed to enable low-income children to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.
Washington County
Washington County’s free lunch program starts June 4 and runs through July 19. Meals are served Mondays through Thursdays at all locations except for Sandtown Park, which operates Tuesdays through Fridays. All locations will be closed July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.
Michael Carr, support services coordinator for Washington County School District, said the school district is overseeing the program at all the locations except for the Sandtown Park location, which is being operated by Utah Food Bank.
All children 18 and younger may eat for free, but all food must be eaten on location. Adult meals and additional meals may be purchased for $4 each, with payment by cash only. For a menu of lunches to be served in June, click here.
Washington County’s free summer lunch locations and times are as follows:
- Legacy Elementary (playground area), 280 E. 100 South, St. George | 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
- Red Mountain Elementary, 263 E. 200 South, Ivins | 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
- Dixie Sun Elementary, 1795 W. 1230 North, St. George | 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
- Hurricane Community Center, 35 W. State Street, Hurricane | 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Washington City Veterans Park, 75 E. Telegraph, Washington | 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Sandtown Park (east side of park), 600 N. Bluff St., St. George | 11 a.m. to noon (Tuesdays through Fridays).
Iron County
Free and reduced lunches in Iron County start on May 29 and will be served at two locations five days a week (Mondays through Fridays) until Aug. 10. No lunches will be served on the July 4 and July 24 holidays.
Volunteers from Southern Utah University and members of the Community Presbyterian Church will prepare and serve the meals. Adults may also purchase meals for $2 each, payable by cash only. Lunches are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

- Main Street Park, 200 N. Main St., Cedar City | 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Enoch Elementary, 4701 N. Wagon Wheel Drive E., Cedar City | noon to 1 p.m.
