Mary Agnes Visser Maughan

April 13, 1925 — Sept. 8, 2017

Mary Agnes Visser Maughan, 92, passed away peacefully on Sept. 8, in Orem. She was born April 13, 1925, in Salt Lake City to Henry and Maria Denos Visser. She married John Lowell Maughan June 28, 1945, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A child of the ’20s, a teen of the ’30s, and a young married of the ’40s she formed lifelong habits of thrift, hard work and service.

She worked in her father’s bakery and attended secretarial school. After their marriage, she and Lowell farmed in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, before moving to the Rupert-Paul, Idaho, area, where they farmed until Lowell retired. They then served in the Oregon Portland LDS Mission from 1985 to 1986. Upon returning, they moved to St. George where they served as St. George LDS Temple workers for 22 years and as Welfare Service missionaries at the LDS Cannery.

Mary was active in the LDS Church all her life. She served in many callings, including Relief Society president, teacher, cub scout leader, organist and chorister. Most recently she served in the ward Relief Society presidency and was thrilled that she was still useful to the Lord at age 89. For many years she enjoyed indexing records for Family Search. It was not uncommon for her to index 2,000 names in a month. She excelled in homemaking skills and her door was always open with a meal and a bed for all visitors.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. Lowell Maughan; and brother, Henry Jr. She is survived by her seven children: Karen Marie (Bud) Whiting, Orlo Henry (Laurel) Maughan, Wayne Lowell (Kathie) Maughan, all of Paul, Idaho, Colleen (John) Perry of Orem, Eileen (Keith) Stoney of South Jordan, Lee (Cindy) Maughan of Panaca, Nevada and Sherilyn (Ed) Frost of American Fork; 47 grandchildren; 182 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
