SANDY – The family of the Sandy man accused of stabbing his father and sister before being arrested in St. George are speaking out about the violent encounter.

“Honestly, it’s been just like a roller coaster; I’m angry and then I’m sad,” said Atu Vaitai.

She and her sister, Ana Da Silva, are leaning on each other. They’re trying to come to terms with a violent attack police say happened inside their parents’ Sandy home on May 13.

Sandy Police say the women’s brother, 26-year-old Sione Vaitai, stabbed his father and 14-year-old sister with a machete.

“There was no family dispute at all; it was just so sudden,” Vaitai said.

Da Silva said they have some ideas about what pushed their relative to violence.

“My brother did have mental issues, and I know that drugs had a role in it as well,” Da Silva said.

Sione Vaitai was on the run for two days until police tracked him down in St. George. He led them on a chase before he was taken into custody. He’s now in the Salt Lake County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.

If everyone blames mental illness why aren,t there more places to get help??? And drugs??? How did the person get drugs?? Family members knew about the situation,, it was a time bomb ready to go off.

Stabbing the family with a machete to the point of putting them in critical condition? Aint it a little quick for forgiveness? Will he still be invited to thanksgiving dinner? Would you want him to be in hand and leg shackles during said thanksgiving dinner?…

    I know I would

Forgiveness does not mean that you let them near you again or in your house. Doing something like that is delusional Bob.

I do agree that it may not be true forgiveness and more of just words because God says to forgive so they want to obey. But, Forgiveness is a process and anger comes before forgiveness. So they might find themselves angry in the future if it is only words.

IDK lba, some things are simply unforgivable. Over time the anger at someone may diminish, but do you really ever forgive someone that stabs you severely with a knife. Do you ever trust that person again? I think not. It may be healthy to let go of the anger for your own well-being and move on, but I think this guy probably belongs in a cage–maybe for the rest of his life. So is it true forgiveness or just letting go of anger? I don’t know

But I’ll tell u lba, from the very limited details of this story it reminds me of an attack like that from a wild animal. So if they want to forgive him because he’s just an out of control animal and not particularly malicious that is their perogative. But I say wild animals like this belong in a cage.

I know that I can say I forgive the people and what they did to me and my kids, but I’m still angry about it. I stop myself from going to deep back into that anger or my husband stops me and pulls me out of it… So did I forgive them? I don’t know, but I keep forgiving them over and over until I get it right.

This animal needs to be euthanized.

Guy looks to be likely over 300LBS. I’d set up a bear cage in the house if I was ever to let him return. Also get some hands on zoo training on how to handle lions and bears.
