ST. GEORGE – A collision caused by a driver allegedly running a red light resulted in one person being sent to the hospital Friday morning.
Around 8:45 a.m., at the intersection of Main Street and 700 South, a Mazda Protege collided with a Pontiac Grand Prix.
A witness told police the Mazda had been westbound on 700 South when it crossed into the intersection on a red light and collided with the northbound Pontiac, St. George Police Officer Travis Willinger said.
The Pontiac crashed into the driver’s side of the Mazda and smashed it inward. While the Mazda driver did not appear to have sustained any major or life-threatening injuries, she was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance for evaluation after complaining about hip pain, Willinger said.
The Pontiac driver was not harmed in the collision.
No citation was issued at the time of the collision, though Willinger said one likely would be once the investigation into the crash concluded.
Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene and temporary blocked a part of the 700 South-Main Street intersection for about an hour.
St. George Fire also responded to the scene.

Wow. Another crash. The only thing that surprises me about driving in st george is that more people don’t die in a completely avoidable collision such as this one. Every day there are at least 2-3 collisions in the paper. Every. Single. Day. I’d call them “accidents” but lets face it 99.999999% of them would have been avoided if the person who caused it was a better, more alert driver who cared more about other people then they do about themselves.
It occurs to me that the majority of people in Utah -especially in St George though- think, for whatever reason, that they are simply better than everyone else; that “it” won’t happen to them; that they are “Gods Golden Child” and can do no wrong; that they are the center of the universe. They do not suspend that belief when they get behind the wheel.
When you boil it down this is why there are so many collisions.
If you are one of those people let me tell you something you already know but don’t want to admit to yourself:
You’re none of those things.
If you think that this doesn’t apply to you, that you’re not one of those people I mentioned above, let me make it more clear:
If you think that you can do anything other than driving WHILE DRIVING, you are one of those people.
That cell phone call can go to voicemail. That text message isn’t important. That screaming child in your backseat can wait.
Take 30 seconds to pull over and stop before you handle it. That 30 seconds might just save a life.
Slow down. Pay attention. Realize that other people matter too.
