ST. GEORGE – A man accused of robbing a Subway restaurant at knife point pleaded not guilty in 5th District Court Wednesday morning.

Richard Scott Labrum, 26, of St. George, appeared before Judge G. Michael Westfell with attorney Trevor Terry for an arraignment hearing in which he entered the plea related the Nov. 8 robbery of the Subway restaurant at 524 N. Bluff St.

Accused of brandishing a knife during the incident, Labrum was subsequently arrested and charged with  a felony for aggravated robbery and a misdemeanor for theft.

While Westfell said he was ready to schedule a jury trial for either January or February, Terry told the court his office had given the prosecution some options for a possible resolution and wanted those reviewed first.

A review hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 16. Labrum remains in custody at the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

On the morning of Nov. 8, police responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Subway on Bluff Street. According a probable cause statement, an employee interviewed by police said a man who entered the restaurant “attempted to disguise himself with duct tape place(d) over this mouth, and some duct tape on his clothing to cover up emblems.”

The man showed a knife and demanded money, leaving with under $500, according to the statement.

Prior to the robbery, a man had called the Subway demanding money as well. The employee told police the voice on the phone and of the man who robbed the restaurant sounded the same.

“I used the phone at Subway and conducted a *69 search and got a phone number to the person that made the strange call,” the officer involved in the incident wrote in the statement. “The phone number came back to Richard Labrum.”

Police contacted Labrum and arrested him soon after. According the probable cause statement, Labrum alledgedly confessed to being the one who made the call and robbed the Subway.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
