SOUTHERN UTAH – The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a flash flood warning for east central Washington County and west central Kane County, effective until 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Affected areas
At 6:43 p.m., Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm producing heavy rain in Zion National Park. As of 7:18 p.m., heavy rainfall associated with an area of thunderstorms is occurring across southeastern portions of Zion National Park.
Some locations that will experience flooding include: Zion National Park, Virgin, Springdale and Rockville. Flash flooding will also occur in Clear Creek Canyon, Pine Creek slot canyon, Keyhole Canyon and Spry Canyon, as well as other slot canyons and dry washes in the area.
The flood warning includes the North Creek drainage as well as the north fork of the Virgin River.
Precautionary/preparedness actions
Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.
Turn around. Don’t drown.
If you are traveling in this area for the next six hours, be aware of flash flooding and avoid any washes and dry slots.
Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
