Copyright, legal guidelines workshop for local artists, organizations

CEDAR CITY —  Learn how to protect your music, art and writing through copyright procedures at the next Professional Development Workshop led by Dr. Keith M. Bradshaw, an active composer, Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Cedar City Aquatic Center.

The workshop addresses “Copyright and Legal Issues for Artists” and is free for members of the Cedar City Arts Council or $10 per session for nonmembers.

“Copyright is a confusing and changing topic,” Bradshaw said. “This workshop will deal with aspects of copyright, the protections it provides, and some of the challenges in today’s market. Topics will include written materials, mechanical licenses, webcasting, podcasting, archiving materials, etc. with guidelines in determining what is legal and what is not.”

Bradshaw holds a doctorate in composition from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University. He is currently Chair of the Music Department at Southern Utah University and teaches courses in theory, composition, orchestration and aural skills. Previous positions include associate professor of music, music program coordinator and chair of the division of arts at Southern Virginia University.

He serves as composer in residence with the Orchestra of Southern Utah and his compositions have been performed across the nation and internationally in China, Spain and England. Also a choral conductor, he has directed the Master Singers, the Southern Utah Heritage Choir, the SUU chamber choir, Opus and the Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir at Southern Virginia University. Additionally, he has worked as an engraver, orchestrator and transcriber.

Artists in the literary, performing and visual arts are invited to participate in the workshop. This Professional Development Workshop Series is sponsored by the CCAC. Debbie Drake, along with invited professionals, leads the workshops to train local artists and arts organizations that desire to know more about the business side of arts management.

“We have enjoyed working with many artists of all disciplines in the six workshops we have sponsored thus far,” Drake said. “The Feb. 14 workshop is essential in helping artists protect their work and have a working understanding of the copyright process.”

There will be a final “Celebration! Presenting Plans/Art” workshop on Feb. 28 to complete this year’s series.

The Cedar City Arts Council strives to support artists of all disciplines and increase access to the arts throughout our area. These workshops are designed to help both individuals and groups to increase their audiences, funding and impact. Visual artists, actors, dancers, writers, film makers and musicians will all benefit from these workshops.

Arts Council memberships start at $10 per year and membership applications are online or available at the door.
