ST. GEORGE – The Utah State University Washington County Extension Office is offering a free workshop to help families, particularly low-income families, learn to cook healthy food on a budget.
The Food $ense program is geared toward teaching adults how to make healthy food choices and encourage family meal time in their homes as well as teaching them how to read food labels and practice safety in the kitchen, Food $ense coordinator Kelly Vincent said.
“Food $ense classes are an important tool we use to teach families … healthy skills to prevent obesity and other preventable diseases,” Vincent said. “We feel that there are many local families who can benefit from the information provided in our Food $ense classes.”
Their classes, which are called “Create” show attendees how to create “delicious meals from scratch using simple ingredients already on hand,” Vincent said adding that though the focus is on cooking, they teach so much more.
Tuesday’s class will address menu planning, cooking on a budget and couponing. Attendees will also learn how to create a “souper soup.”
The class is free for participants but an RSVP is required to reserve a spot. In addition to Tuesday’s class, another Food $ense class will be held Feb. 24 where topics such as creating a whole food diet, vegetables and homemade seasonings, consensed soups and baking mixes will be discussed.
