ST. GEORGE – The Southern Utah Heritage Choir will present its annual Veterans Day Fireside entitled “Celebrate America” Sunday at 7 p.m. at the St. George Tabernacle. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a wonderful evening of stirring patriotic music, at no charge.

The choir will perform patriotic selections including “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful,” “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”  The inspiring tribute “Salute to the Armed Forces” will pay homage to all veterans who have served the country.

The Veterans Day Fireside is directed by Dr. Nancy Allred, and features pianist Brandon Lee, and organist Karen Cantera.

During this patriotic celebration, the Heritage Choir will feature music and narration from its inaugural concert. In 1994 Floyd Rigby was asked to direct a choir to celebrate the traditions and rich heritage of Southern Utah and the nation. Initial participants included over 150 singers. “Celebrate America” was performed in the Tabernacle in honor of Veterans Day in November 1994, and the concert was repeated later that month for the Western Governors Association.

The Southern Utah Heritage Choir was born with that first performance and since that time, the choir has been woven into the fabric of Utah’s Dixie. The choir has played a vital role in commemorating important local events including Heritage Week, Veteran’s Day, the dedication of the Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts, the dedication of the local Catholic Church, and the 222nd National Guard farewell.

The choir presents annual Christmas and Easter concerts, spring and fall concerts, and frequent musical firesides in the historic St. George Tabernacle, collaborating with guest soloists and conductors and benefiting the Southern Utah community with choral festivals and workshops.

The choir is currently preparing for its annual Christmas concerts, which will be performed in the Tabernacle on Dec. 11, 13 and 14 and will feature Jordan Bluth as the guest tenor soloist on Dec. 13 and 14.

Look at all that red. Red was the color to wear at the council meeting to support an anti-discrimination law against gays in St George. Show your support of the anti-discrimination ordinance to stop further discrimination in your community.
