LITTLEFIELD, Arizona — A man was transported to the hospital late afternoon Friday after his car became engulfed in flames following an accident at mile marker 5 on Old Highway 91.
Around 4 p.m., Arizona Highway Patrol was dispatched to assist Washington County Sheriff’s Office in a report of a burning car. Upon arrival, the car was found in the northbound lanes of Old Highway 91 near mile marker 5 completely engulfed in flames, AHP Trooper Greg McBride said.
The license plate was unreadable from the fire, but through computer checking, the car was identified as a four door Nissan Altima, McBride said.
Two passerby motorists from New Zealand were on scene and reported that they had seen the car go off the road. It was reported that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Old Highway 91 when it went off road and hit an embankment, then re-entered the roadway where it came to rest in the northbound lanes, McBride said, at which point the Altima caught fire.
The motorists from New Zealand stopped and were able to pull the man from the Altima and then called 911.
Northbound traffic was diverted into the southbound lanes while Ivins Fire Department firefighters extinguished the fire.
Ivins Ambulance transported the man to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by responders on scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.
