Climbing film depicts deadly Sherpa attack, boldest woman climber, and more

ST. GEORGE – Adventure enthusiasts will not want to miss the showing of Reel Rock 8: a documentary-film tour chronicling a handful of unbelievable world-class climbers and adventurers who are pushing the modern boundaries of adventure.

The Reel Rock 8 tour will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m., at the Megaplex 6 Main Street Theatre in St. George. This event was organized by local outdoor gear shop, The Desert Rat, as a way to give back to their customers.

The Film

What started eight years ago as a film about bouldering and sport climbing, has expanded and now includes films about other climbing activities, like ice climbing, alpine climbing, trad climbing and big-wall climbing.

This year’s film includes four different segments about climbing and the culture surrounding it, Bo Beck, owner of The Desert Rat, said. One portion of the film will feature Hazel Findlay, a female climber known as the boldest woman climber in the world.

She climbs stuff that men normally are afraid to climb,” Beck said “She does some really gnarly routes with a friend of hers.”

Another portion of the film follows, Ueli Steck a world-renowned Swiss climber who has set multiple speed records in alpine climbing. Steck’s Everest attempt last year made world news when his expedition was attacked by a group of local Sherpa climbing guides.

They felt threatened, Beck said, because his climbing group passed them up on the trail.” “They went back to base camp and tried to kill him.”

The film also documents Yuji Hirayama, a top climber from Japan, and Daniel Woods, a young hot-shot American boulderer in Borneo attempting to scale the tallest peak on the hardest route at the highest elevation in the world. And finally, another segment of the film is a historical account of the 1970’s Yosemite climbing counter-culture of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.

More Details

This is the second year that the film tour has stopped in St. George, and the second time Beck has hosted it. Beck secured the copyright and Megaplex 6 location to show the film and The Desert Rat paid for both.

The film does depict some drug use and mild foul language, so it may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at The Desert Rat or at The Spot Bouldering Gym. Tickets will not be for sale at the movie theatre.

These unsafe climbers who do not want to follow local rules must be banned from climbing mountains in Nepal. These people have all the resource to tell their side of the -lie- story, but poor Sherpas do not. You do not have to believe their version. Sherpa’s centuries old credential can not be ruined by these few upset disrespectful so called climbers. RESPECT!
