SANTA CLARA – Firefighters were dispatched to a home on the corner of Crestview Drive and Southhill Drive in the Santa Clara Heights Friday morning, after a fire was reported in the garage.
Initially reported as a possible car fire within the garage shortly after 9 a.m., the blaze soon spread to an enclosed patio. Crews from the Santa Clara Fire Department were dispatched. The homeowner was reportedly home at the time of the fire, but evacuated and was unharmed.
Santa Clara Fire Chief Dan Nelson said the fire department responded with two engines and fire crews. However, due to the heat inside the home during the fire coupled with the heat of the day, they requested additional manpower in order to rotate the fire crews.
The St. George Fire Department arrived on the scene with three additional engines and a ladder unit. About 30 firefighters worked together to quickly douse the fire before it spread to the rest of the home. “We really appreciate St. George for the help,” he said.
“We knocked the fire down fairly quickly,” Nelson said. “It saved further damage to the house.”
Physical damage to the home was confined to the garage and enclosed patio. A car parked in the garage was destroyed, and smoke damage is likely though unconfirmed.
The cause of the fire is presently under investigation, Nelson said.
