FREDONIA, Ariz. – Outdoor recreation lovers will soon have additional opportunities to enjoy the Kaibab Plateau’s breathtaking overlooks of the Grand Canyon.
The North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest will begin work this summer to extend the popular Rainbow Rim trail by an additional eight miles.
Following an internal environmental analysis and public comment and scoping periods, the district signed a decision memo in November 2012 allowing for construction of a trail extension. The extension will consist of approximately three miles of new trail and four miles of road-to-trail conversion.
The district plans to complete the final layout this spring and begin ground work in June, pending the availability of funds for a trail crew.
Constructed in the 1980s, the Rainbow Rim trail is 18 miles of breathtaking single-track mountain biking with unique terrain and views that attract both riders and hikers. It is currently the only location of public land where people can ride along the rim of the Grand Canyon.
